The name, “Windber,” was a juxtaposition of the syllables of “Berwind,” the coal company that built this town in the very early-20th century as a regional headquarters. A total of 945 buildings – from municipal buildings to businesses, religious structures, meeting halls and worker housing – remain from that period and contribute to the character of this community.
